Creative Hubs and Entrepreneurship as vehicle for Social Change 0 Reply

“The new development paradigm, where the main factors of economic and social growth are knowledge, creativity, originality and skills, has not only changed the economic structure, but also the concepts of growth and development. The ‘knowledge-based economy’ finds its economic support in creativity and talent, and emphasises cultural industries as a conceptual framework within which growth generators exist.”[1]

Spread the word and make a difference

In 2008 the cultural and creative sectors contributed an estimated 4.5 % to EU GDP, and employed some 3.8% of Europe’s workforce[1]. Beyond this direct contribution to jobs and growth, these sectors trigger spill-overs in other areas such as tourism, content for ICT and provide benefits for education, social inclusion and social innovation. They are therefore particularly important as Europe and other regions in the world seek to emerge from the current economic crisis.  With this regard, social entrepreneurship represents an opportunity to attempt to further broad social, cultural and environmental goals by using innovative solutions and measuring performance in positive return to society.

At the same time, there is an important development of creative hubs and business in Europe and worldwide. They are physical or virtual ‘place’ based on collective or co-operative models and on creative, technological or cultural work aiming at supporting the development of companies and projects but also connecting people in networks and creative communities.

The Dialogue CafĂ© Association aims at supporting social entrepreneurship in creative sectors by offering its network to address the challenges faced by creative and social entrepreneurs, providing networking and partnerships opportunities, promoting research and reflection, sharing good practices and case studies as well as supporting the development of social entrepreneur’s competences.

With this purpose, the Dialogue Café Association organise a programme of sessions focused on:

1. Exchanging thoughts on Creative Hubs and Entrepreneurship, vehicle of social change and development (20 October);

2. Becoming Entrepreneur and hub Manager: creative smoothie of competences (27 October);

3. Partnership and Fundraising opportunities for social and creative entrepreneurs (10 November);

4. Good practices and initiatives of social entrepreneurship in creative sectors (11 November);

Creating tales: Join us and Share your story! 0 Reply

Tales are typically interlaced with the inspired narrative of a society, embedding its historical origin, conveying its cultural representation, and often emitting its cultural beliefs. These are commonly constructed with identifiable universal common denominators, such as good vs. evil. As such, tales frequently become an archival reference of a culture, providing a looking-glass to the civilisation they were produced in. In Interpretation of Fairytales, Marie-Louise Von Franz states that fairytales “mirror the basic structure of the psyche” and provide the most elementary archetypal insight into the collective unconscious.

Creating tales workshop 2014 2

The Dialogue Cafe Association organises this workshop with the aim of promoting to intercultural exchange through the sharing of tales from the participants’ homelands, and re-enacting extracts or scenarios of these tales to create a new – and culturally-shared – tale.

This workshop will deal with the topic of fairytales and other tales as a vessel of the collective unconscious cultural memory of the participants, with the prospect of imparting awareness of both cultural distinction and resemblance, through the construction of a shared tale.

The workshop will take place on 21, 25, 27 August 2015 and will connect Dialogue Cafés based in Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro.

Youth transforming conflict: a training programme 2 2

Nowadays because of globalisation and migrations youth are often confronted with the challenge of managing diversity and dealing with differences. Impact of digital technologies on low tech industries – the future of textiles production 0 Reply

Diapositiva1

The Dialogue CafĂ© Novi Pazar was funded as result of the UN project “Improving Human Security for Vulnerable Communities in southwest Serbia”.

In this framework, DC Novi Pazar will lead a session on the topic “Impact of digital technologies on low tech industries – the future of textiles production” (05 June 2015, 14h00 – 15h30 London time).

The textile industry in Serbia holds a special significance, and Novi Pazar is a city with a long tradition and great potential in manufacturing textiles. Novi Pazar has a particularly strong clothes industry, more specifically making high quality jeans. You can find more information on the website of the Association of Novi Pazar textile manufacturers.

Because of the various processes involved in making jeans, this industry is considered one of the “dirtiest” in textile manufacturing. That’s why the use of eco-friendly technologies is an important issue.

On the other hand, new digital technologies enable digital design and printing via computers and special printers, without having to worry about quantity. It opens the question of how can textile manufacturers preserve tradition and product quality in a time of new challenges. What’s the future of textile manufacturing?”

Participants representing governments, civil society and private companies will join us to discuss and exchange views on this issue.

Moderator: Vanja Popovic, United Nations Association of Serbia, DC Novi Pazar

– DC Lisbon:

  • Helena Barroco, President a.i. Dialogue CafĂ© Association
  • Participants from the fashion and textile field will join us during the discussion. Among them, MODATEX, IADE.

DC Novi Pazar:

  • Semih Durovic, Regional Project Manager, USAID Sustainable Local Development Project
  • Representative of Association of Textile Producers ASSTEX, Novi Pazar
  • Meho Camović, Director, School of Textile Design

Other participants from DC Florence will join us.
